The serious stuff

Work experience

LukesTheWord, Maastricht (NL) — own company, freelancer

February 2024 – present

I translate and transcreate from Dutch, French, German and Italian into English. I work on a range of documents, with a focus on food and drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), marketing, literature, and art, culture and cinema. I also provide English editing and proofreading services, so you can show off your English copy with pride and peace of mind.

Duo vertaalburo, Maastricht (NL) — in-house translator, editor and proofreader

July 2015 – January 2024

I translated documents, subtitles and other copy from Dutch, French, German, Italian to English and revised colleagues’ and external translators work in English, Dutch, French, German and Italian. Big brands, mid-sized brands, small brands, up-and-coming brands: my job was to make them all happy.

This role also involved terminology management (being the guard dog for clients’ preferred terms), quality insurance (down to every last comma) and drafting style guides (to make sure everyone was on the same page).

I was also the go-to person to answer English-related queries from clients in Dutch and English, and I also liaised with project managers in Dutch.

As a member of the English department, I had the enriching opportunity to train and mentor new in-house translators. They all turned out great.

Lexcelera, Paris (FR) — Project management internship

February 2014 - August 2014

This internship involves assisting senior project managers in an industrious Parisian business, proofreading translations in English, French, Dutch, German and Italian, as well as performing terminology management and quality assurance. Meeting deadlines came as second nature.

I also manned the reception desk and answered calls in French, English, Dutch and German.

Wakefield and Durham (UK) — Freelance translation work

July 2010 - July 2014

I performed ad hoc freelance translation (French and German to English) work, focused on marketing, legal, and technical documents.
